What is Environmental Education?

Environmental Education is an area of education which aims to disseminate information about the environment, in order to promote its preservation and the sustainable use of resources.
The concept of Environmental Education has evolved significantly, and there are several interpretations according to the context and the influence and experience of each entity.
According to UNESCO, "environmental education is a permanent process in which individuals gain awareness of their environment and acquire the knowledge, values, skills, experiences, and also the determination which will enable them to act individually and collectively to solve present and future environmental problems" (UNESCO, 1987).
It is a permanent and participative educational process, with the purpose of developing critical thinking regarding the environmental issue and promoting the society's ability to understand the origin and evolution of environmental problems.
