Environmental impact study of the CITRES Project under Public Consultation
The CITRES Project – Integrated Centre for Solid Waste Collection and Treatment of Maio Island has entered the technical evaluation phase of its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) by the competent authorities and is currently undergoing a public consultation period, in accordance with the applicable legislation.
Within the framework of this process, the EIA Evaluation Commission, composed of the Municipality of Maio, the National Directorate for Environment, the National Water and Sanitation Agency, the Delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Maio, and the National Institute for Territorial Management, recently met on Maio Island to gain a detailed understanding of the project, review the proposed solutions, and carry out a technical site visit to the location designated for the implementation of CITRES.
The public participation period will last for 30 working days, representing a key milestone in the development of the CITRES Project by promoting transparency, community engagement, and the integration of relevant contributions.
The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a fundamental instrument of environmental policy, ensuring that decision-making incorporates sustainability criteria and impact mitigation measures, in alignment with the principles of the circular economy. This process is particularly relevant considering that Maio Island has been recognized as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve since 2020.
CITRES is a project funded by the European Union and Camões, I.P., with the participation of LIPOR as an implementing partner and specialist in waste management and has been under implementation since 2024.
